On Digg I left a comment on an article discussing court cases (specifically the columbine shooting) and how the rulings can effect free speech on the web (article here).

After reading the article I read through the comments Digg users had left to find that most had a conservative tone to it. This is surprising since Digg has become intolerantly liberal and the community promptly buries anything remotely conservative (comments included).

After leaving a comment expressing my surprise I got a reply from jasonXhendrix stating:

Wanting freedom isn't conservative. Restricting it isn't liberal.

The federal government is, and always has been, the worst protector of personal freedom. That's what we REALLY have to learn from this.

I really enjoyed his non-partisan opinion, and now that I am thinking about it more and more I am starting to appreciate just how true his statement is.

The government will always seek to make itself more bigger and more powerful. I do not believe it does this to make us all slaves or to take away our liberties - I believe it does this to better serve us.

However, through serving us better it ends up taking away freedoms. All in the name of good.

This concept is not new. In fact, its the plot to most apocalyptic robot movies. For example take I,Robot. The robots made to help humans enforce martial law in order to protect those they serve.
They meant well, but obviously that's not the future any of us want.

The same holds true for Government. Any Government. It has the right idea at heart, but there's a point where it just needs to stop growing and let things be. We need to stop fixing what isn't broken.
